One of the ocean's most formidable marine predators, the mosasaur lived in the Cretaceous Period. They were marine reptiles closely related to snakes & monitor lizard, known for their ferociousness. They had double-hinged jaws & flexible skulls, which enabled them to gulp down their prey almost whole. They breathed air, were powerful swimmers, & were well-adapted to living in the warm, shallow inland seas. They were so well adapted to this environment that they gave birth to live young
